How to plan a promotional reel for your small business
A promotional reel does not need a film crew. It needs one clear message, the right first seconds and an easy next step. Here is how to plan one before you brief a designer, or before you make it yourself.
1. Decide the one thing the video should say
The most common mistake is trying to say everything: every product, every service, the whole history of the business. A short video can carry one message well. Before anything else, finish this sentence: “After watching, I want people to …” Visit the shop this weekend? Order the new pizza? Book a site visit? Everything in the video should support that one answer.
2. Choose the length
Shorter is usually easier to watch to the end. Match the length to how much you genuinely need to show.
| Length | What fits |
|---|---|
| Up to 15 seconds | One offer or one product. A festival discount, a weekend special, a new arrival, an opening date. |
| Up to 30 seconds | A product with two or three reasons to buy, a short menu reveal, or a launch with a price and a call to action. |
| Up to 60 seconds | A product range, a walk through your shop, a property launch or a short introduction to your company. |
3. Make the first seconds count
People decide very quickly whether to keep watching. Open with the most interesting thing you have: the product in action, the offer in large text, or a question your customer already asks. Save the logo for the end, where it reminds people who made the offer.
4. Write for people watching without sound
Many people scroll with the sound off, in shops, offices and on the bus. Put the key words on screen in large, short lines: the product name, the price, the date, the offer. Music and voice-over add feeling, but the video should still make sense on mute.
5. Ideas by type of business
- Restaurant or café: The signature dish being made or served, its price, the offer day, and how to order.
- Jewellery store: One collection, close-ups of the pieces, the occasion (Dhanteras, wedding season), and an invitation to visit.
- Clothing store or boutique: New arrivals shown one after another, the fabric or craft, the price range and the store location.
- Real estate: The building, two or three amenities, the location advantage, the starting price and a site-visit number.
- Coaching class or clinic: What you teach or treat, one clear result you offer, the batch or appointment dates and how to enquire.
6. End with one clear action
Finish with a single next step and the details needed to take it: “WhatsApp to order” with your number, “Visit us this Sunday” with the area name, or “Book a site visit” with a phone number. One action works better than a list of five.
7. What to send your designer
- The one message and the action you want, from steps 1 and 6.
- Your offer details: product names, prices, dates and any terms.
- Your logo, and your brand colours if you have them.
- Photos or phone clips of your products, shop or work. Daylight, steady and close up is best.
- Where you will post it: Instagram Reels, WhatsApp status, YouTube Shorts or Facebook.
- Two or three videos you like, from any brand, so the style is clear.
- When you need it, especially for festivals and launches.
No usable footage? Product scenes and clips can now be created with AI video tools and combined with your real photos, logo and offer. Ask for the final result to be checked by hand: AI output often needs correcting before it is ready for customers.
8. Post it in the right shape
For Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and WhatsApp status, use a vertical 9:16 video. Keep important text away from the very top and bottom of the frame, where the app’s buttons and captions sit. If you also want it on a website or a TV in your shop, ask for a square or wide version at the same time.
Mistakes to avoid
- Too much text on one screen, or text that disappears before it can be read.
- A phone number or price that is too small to read on a phone.
- Starting with a long logo animation.
- Posting once and forgetting it. Pin the reel, share it on status, and send it to customers who asked about the offer.
